Counting down to the Shuttle launch: watching from the beach

Today’s Orlando Sentinel includes a great 20-page special section on the 30-year history of the Space Shuttle. Definitely a keeper.

Counting down to Friday’s scheduled launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis, we also have a map of the Cape Canaveral area, offering advice on how to view the last liftoff.

Local beaches have always been popular places to watch, including Jetty Park and the Cocoa Beach parks. Expect those beaches to be packed to capacity to people. New Smyrna Beach is also usually crowded with Shuttle watchers.

Of course, you can see the Shuttle trail from other beaches, even as far north as Ormond Beach, into Flagler.

Liftoff is scheduled for 11:26 a.m. Friday so if you want to get anywhere near the Cape, plan accordingly because the crowds will be massive and traffic will likely start for hours before and hours afterward.
